Ottoman With Storage question by needs2party: Tree Ottoman…hmm..?
The other day I decided I wanted to make a sort of ottoman/ storage trunk out of a tree log. In my head it all seems very feasible but I have little to no experience with carpentry.
I thought I could get a thick log, say 1-2 ft diameter
- Cut off the top inch or two (to be later reattached with a hinge)
- Hollow out the inside somehow
- Reattach top
- Possibly do some sort of sealant
and have a pretty nifty storage unit
If anyone knows anything about carpentry could you please give me advice on how to hollow out the inside?
I’d considered cutting it in half, then hollowing, then reattaching the two sides, but it would be much easier if there were a way to do it without cutting it in half.
I’ve thought of a hole saw but it wouldn’t be big enough and so wouldn’t really work. Sanding would be inconvenient probably. I’m at a loss.

Also does anyone know if it would rot? or bugs would grow in it? How could I seal it?

Not to burst your bubble or anything but…. Last year I decided to cut small (6-10″) tree logs in half, hollow out 4-6 holes in the top (bark side) with a hole saw and put small glass candle holders & candles in them. Ok, the cutting the small log in half was the easiest thing I did! Using the hole saw was quite a bear. Needless to say, I will not attempt to do that again but they turned out very well.
So, now that I have said that….perhaps a jig saw would get you going, it just depends on how deep you’re looking to cut it.
Will it rot? What type of tree is it hardwood? pine? Cedar? Most woods will last quite a long time out of the elements with no sealant or perhaps a wood protectant. If it’s going to be outdoors I’d put a varnish on it.
Would you consider cutting the top and the bottom, hinging the top but using a drill press to begin removing the middle….just thinking.
